Little is known about the life of Saint Philomena’s life. In 1802 the remains of a young woman were found in a catacomb of Saint Priscilla on the Via Salaria. It was covered with stones, the symbols on which indicated that the body was a martyr named Saint Philomena. She is the only saint to have revealed her story in what you can call “Private revelation”Saint Philomena revealed her story to three different people, in different parts of the world. These three people didn’t know each other as well!Philomena is believed to be born in Corfu, a small island in ancient Greece, towards the end of 3rd century.Her father was a king, who controlled a small state in Greece, and her mother was also from a royal blood. Saint Cecilia is one of seven women, excluding the Blessed Virgin, commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass. Cecilia lived during the early part of third century, in Rome. There she lived with her noble family, who in the past, were known for their bravery and intelligence. They named their daughter ‘Cecilia’ which means “lily of heaven.” She started spreading the word about God, when it was forbidden by the Roman empire. Cecilia, along with her husband and his brother preached to the people of Rome. Her husband and his brother was punished for doing so, and soon Cecilia was also subjected to punishment. Margaret of Antioch in the West, known as Marina the Great Martyr in the East, is celebrated as a saint by the Roman Catholic and Anglican Churches. Margaret also called Marina, lived in Antioch, where her father was a pagan priest. Margaret embraced the Christianity of her caregiver and consecrated her virginity to God.  According to a very old book, The Golden Legend, written about 800 years ago, many miraculous things happened when the men tried to torture and kill Margaret. That she existed and was martyred are probably true; all else is probably fictitious embroidery and added to her story, which was immensely popular in the Middle Ages, spreading from the East all over Western Europe.
